The headline number
2nd-driest
state in the country, where data center growth shares a basin with the shrinking Great Salt Lake
Water stress
Severe: the Great Salt Lake basin is in long-term decline and every consumptive use, data centers included, now gets argued in lake terms.
The local story
'Utah data center water usage' became a breakout search for one reason: the Great Salt Lake. Every gallon evaporated in the Salt Lake and Utah valleys is a gallon that doesn't reach a lake already at historic lows, which puts even modest campuses inside the state's defining environmental story.
The anchors are the NSA's Bluffdale facility (whose ~1.7 million gallons/day design draw made it the original data-center-water controversy a decade before chatbots) and Meta's Eagle Mountain campus, which Meta pairs with funded water-restoration projects in the basin.
Utah's restoration-credit approach (operators funding measured returns to the lake) is the most concrete water-offset experiment in the industry; whether the measured returns match the consumptive draws is the open question local journalism keeps auditing.
