How much water does TikTok use compared to AI?
TikTok publishes no environmental data, but short-video streaming runs near other video platforms: a typical 20-minute session works out to roughly 0.03 kWh and, in Mid water terms, around 0.13 liters, about 18 ChatGPT prompts. The recommendation engine behind every swipe is itself AI.
One AI prompt (Mid)

130 mL
Prompt: one typical ChatGPT exchange at the Mid scenario (cooling plus the water behind the electricity). Item: its full water footprint, as published by the source.
20 minutes of TikTok uses as much water as

'How much water does TikTok use' became a breakout search precisely because there is no official answer: ByteDance publishes no environmental reports for the app. The defensible estimate treats it as mobile video streaming: same order as Netflix per minute, mostly device and network.
The twist is that TikTok was the world's largest consumer AI deployment before chatbots existed: every swipe triggers recommendation-model inference across data centers that are now expanding into the same markets (and aquifers) as the chatbot build-out. The line between 'social media water' and 'AI water' was never really there.
For your personal ledger, the equivalence runs through the same kWh: an hour of scrolling and a heavy day of chatting both come to somewhere between one and three glasses of Mid-scenario water. The aggregate build-out is the story worth watching, and it's on the data center map.
